Volunteers in Medicine in Schuylkill & Carbon Counties

Volunteers in Medicine is not a federally-funded organization. The clinic operates solely off of donations from businesses and individuals, grants from foundations and proceeds from special events. There are many ways to support VIM. Every donation, regardless of amount, is crucial to our mission of keeping low-income families in Schuylkill & Carbon Counties healthy, well and working.

Physicians and Medical Volunteers

Retired and practicing physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dentists and other medical professionals are the primary providers of care at Volunteers in Medicine clinics. Working within VIM’s “Culture of Caring,” medical volunteers often feel they get more out of their volunteer experience than they give.

Each VIM clinic recruits, trains and manages their own volunteer staff of providers. The volunteer coordinator is responsible for scheduling and orienting the volunteer staff of health care providers. The Medical Advisory Committee of the Board develops policies and procedures for:

•Licensing and credentialing volunteer medical professionals

Obtaining medical liability insurance coverage for the clinic, volunteers and staff

•Quality assurance and risk management planning

Confidentiality policies and HIPAA requirements; medical records systems; scope of clinical services

•Advice about construction plans, pharmacy, diagnostics and lab options

Non-Medical Volunteers

People who make the best VIM volunteers are ones who feel passionate about the mission. Each clinic recruits and trains a cadre of local volunteers in a variety of roles that may include: receptionists, schedulers, greeters, pharmacy assistants, eligibility screeners, interpreters, and others. Each clinic also recruits board members who volunteer time, talent and treasure to set policy so the clinic not only survives, but also thrives.
